Team Molly assisted by Emily Hill and Carol Luttmer just won the Sundance Cup in Fort Worth, TX. The Sundance Cup is a Grade 3 International Match Race Event sailed in J22’s. There are some very accomplished women sailors on the trophy, including our mentor/coach Liz Baylis. Our win qualifies us for the Santa Maria Cup, May 27-31 in Annapolis, which is a Grade 1 International Match Race Event, the most competitive level.
This was our first match race regatta and the first time sailing a J22 for most of us. Emily Hill was Molly C’s teammate at Yale and was able to learn the bow position very quickly this week. Carol Luttmer is the Canadian women’s 470 crew who did an excellent job trimming the jib and spinnaker sheets. Molly O. was mainsheet trimmer and tactician, while Molly C. drove. We came to the event hoping to learn the basics of match racing. A match race consists of two identical boats racing against each other, concluding with only one winner. J22’s are 22 foot responsive keel boat, sailed with four people.
The first three days there was a lot of wind, and we did not sail with spinnakers for a most of it. The first day we made some procedural mistakes. We lost two races because we did not fly our red flag when the umpires had made mistakes. We moved on from the first day and did not lose another race until the finals. We were undefeated for two straight days!!!
