The fourth day of racing was another tough day. We did three races. The first race was our best race of the day, finishing 28th. The wind was much lighter than the previous days, 5-8 knots. We struggled off the line and ended up in the middle of the pack, tacking a lot. When we finally got clear we sailed for a few minutes before we got to a really crowded top of the beat. We were having a hard time holding in really tight lanes. The second race was going a lot better. We got a clear lane pretty soon after the start and were about mid fleet at the windward mark. We passed a few boats on the downwind but the last upwind we got caught on the outside of a right shift and lost a bunch of boats, finishing 32nd. The third race was bittersweet. We had an awesome start. We had a nice wide lane and could continue for a long time to the left, which is where we planned to go. Unfortunately, our speed was completely off. Boats just sailed around us. This was the same condition that we had in Australia, which we struggled with, about 8-12 knots, puffy, and choppy. After finishing the race, Carol and I came up with a few ideas about how to make the boat go faster. Yesterday, there were three races scheduled. Unfortunately there was no wind for most of the day. After a three hour postponement on land we went out on the water for another three hour postponement. We finally got a race in at 5pm, in about 5-7 knots. We had a good start and played the left side of the course really well. There was a right shift with pressure at the top of the beat, so our side lost out. We were still mid fleet. There were a lot of chaotic mark roundings with the men’s fleet. We made out well on the first two but lost about 10 boats on the last mark rounding, finishing in 23rd place.
