Our new boat was built at Mackay in Auckland, New Zealand. We get to pick the color and the layout of the boat, including where we want all the blocks and cleats. The boat is then shipped to Los Angeles. Molly C. and her mom drove down to Los Angeles and picked up the boat and brought it back to San Francisco. Then Molly C. and her dad took Molly V.’s car with the new boat to Annapolis, MD. A week later Molly V. picked up the car, the new boat, the the old boat and our other equipment and drove it all down to Miami. Once we had all of our equipment in one place, we had to sort through it all. We wanted to make our two boats identical, so that we can easily switch between the two boats. We have learned over the past three years a lot of little tricks to make a 470 easier to sail and we want to implement them on the new boat. We also had to decide what equipment goes to what boat and what additional equipment we need. We now own 3 masts, 4 booms, 5 spinnaker poles, 5 sets of sails, and countless other spare parts and tools. We get our booms from South Carolina, our sails from San Diego/ Japan, our masts from England, our spare parts from Annapolis, our hardware from Wisconsin, and other random boat pieces from Germany. It is not easy to get all the equipment we need! But we need to make sure we always have spare equipment in case something breaks. This spring our new boat will be shipped to Europe and our old boat will stay in the United States so that we can continue training. I attached pictures of us driving with the all the boats (including a 420 that we brought to Miami for Annapolis Yacht Club), us sorting through all of the equipment and finally us sailing with the new boat.
