Team Molly won a Bronze Medal today at the Rolex Miami Olympic Class Regatta
(RMOCR). The cold front was still present, bringing cold temperatures and a
strong northerly (generally very shifty) wind.
We went into the medal race just two points behind the Finnish team.
Because the points are doubled for a medal race and the medal race breaks
the tie breaker, all we had to do was beat them in the race. We took an
aggressive approach, attacking them at the start. We drew a foul on them at
about 1 minute, so they had to spin a 720 degree turn. When the race
started, the individual recall flag went up and we were unsure if we were
over and went back to clear ourselves (we later found out we were not over).
After we restarted the race, we tacked out to the right side of the course.
We had great speed and rounded the windward mark right behind the Finnish
team and were able to pass them on the downwind. From there we just extended
our lead. We finished the race in 4th place overall and ahead of the
Finnish, winning us a Bronze medal.
RMOCR was a very important event for us because it was a grade 1
International event and the second of seven stops on the ISAF World Cup
Tour. Furthermore we qualified for the 2009 US Sailing Team. We were the
second US team, but close behind the current World Champions- Erin Maxwell
and Isabelle Kinsolving. For complete results, please visit:
