Team Molly just completed another training camp in Miami. We sailed from the Miami Yacht Club because it is closer to the ocean. We wanted to get some practice in the open ocean before we go to Europe next month. We had four days of beautiful sailing, with mainly 12-15 knots and big waves.
The first day we went out into the ocean was a little rough. We had not sailed in waves since the World Championships last January. But our coach, Caroline Brisebois, gave us some great boat handling advice the first two days. We changed the way we were doing a few things inside the boat. And then our other coach, Bunny Warren, helped us with our technique and set up. Our upwind and downwind speed improved quickly over the few days we worked with Bunny. We were training with the US men’s team, Stu McNay and Graham Biel, as well as the Austrian men’s team. Each day we got a little closer to them and by the last day we were able to win the last race!
Right after the RMOCR, Team Molly participated in an advanced match racing clinic led by Dave Perry. Molly V. crewed for gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe and Molly C. crewed for Stu McNay. We learned a few tricks about how to attack our next medal race a little better. We enjoyed doing something different for a few days but we were ready to get on the ocean in the 470.
We are currently taking a few days off before we head back to Miami for more ocean training out of the Miami Yacht Club.
