470 World Championships- Day Six
Today was a successful day. We finally passed boats on the downwind
legs. Although we did see the back of the fleet a little more than we
would have liked, we were excited with our definite improvements
In the first race there was 5-7 knots of breeze, chop and upwind
current. We had our first really bad start of the regatta. Our
upwind boat speed was not great and we made a couple bad decisions up
the first beat, putting us in last place around the windward mark. We
tried to stay positive and keep racing. We passed two boats by the
second upwind and we were close to the fleet for the last downwind.
We managed to get past a bunch of boats on the downwind and have a
good leeward mark rounding to finish in 19th place.
By the start of the second race, the wind was a little lighter around
4-6 knots and there was still chop and upwind current. We had a better
start but got a little distracted with all the traffic at the
beginning of the first beat. We managed to round the first windward
mark in 15th place. On the first downwind we passed a couple boats,
putting us in the top 10 for a little bit. Unfortunately, our second
downwind was not very good, which was compounded by a Chinese boat
hitting us after the leeward mark. Luckily, the boat damage was not
major, but we lost some gelcoat. We tried to stay focused for the
last upwind and downwind. On the last downwind we managed to pass a
couple boats, allowing us to finish in 14th place.
We are currently in 17th place overall in the silver fleet with one
race left tomorrow. We have a great opportunity to move up in the
standings if we have a good race. For full results please visit:
