Today was a day of progress for Team Molly. We made some huge jumps on our upwind and downwind speed. We were finally able to really race with the top teams. We had some difficult moments, but we ended on a good note.
The morning started with strong Santa Anna winds, but the prevailing westerly was soon fighting it. The first race was very shifty, light and pretty flat water. We didn’t have one of our best starts, but we tacked out and were able to get a clear lane. We managed to stay with the top pack throughout the race, but were never able to really break into it. Our speed was decent, but not extraordinary. We ended up finishing the race in 7th. We were happy, but we knew we could do better.
By the beginning of the second race, the westerly had filled more. The water was a little choppier and the breeze increased to 5-8 knots. We had a good start and we sailed a really solid beat. We were battling for the lead at the top of the beat. We were going to round the mark in 2nd or 3rd, but we fouled another boat and had to spin a 720. We still rounded the mark in 5th; however, the race committee informed us that we had started the race early and could not continue racing.
After a long break, we were ready for the third race. The wind died down to 4-6 knots, but the chop was still prevalent. We had a pretty good start but we could not quite hang with the two fastest boats in the fleet. We tacked out and then tried to get back into phase. We ended up rounding the first windward mark in 8th. We continued to gain distance around the course until the last downwind when we passed 4 boats. Then at the leeward mark onto the top reach we passed one more boat to finish in 3rd place. This was the first time we have made significant gains on a downwind!
