Today was a difficult day for Team Molly. We had some frustrating moments. Nevertheless, we were able to learn a lot from the tough times, thanks to some help from our coaches, Pease Glaser and Skip Whyte. We got out onto the racecourse early this morning and tuned up with Justin Law and Mike Miller. We were going well; however, by the time the first race began the wind had picked up just a little bit. Our boat was set up for the really light and consequently our boat speed was not excellent. Although we had a good start, we had a hard time holding our lanes and were forced to go to places on the racecourse we did not want to go. We ended up finishing the race in 9th place. The second race, the wind picked up a little bit along with the chop. We made a few adjustments to the boat and were ready for a new race. Once again, during the first beat we were a little off on our speed. We made some adjustments on the downwind and had better speed on the next upwind. Although we were going well, we made some bad decisions, causing us to actually lose boats. Nevertheless, we were pleased with our correct instincts on changing our set up during the race. We are definitely becoming more comfortable with recognizing when our boat speed is off pace and knowing how to change it. We finished the race in 10th place. The third race, the wind actually backed off a little bit, but the chop stayed. The wind was very inconsistent, ranging from 4-8 knots. We had a decent start and were able to hang in a very thin lane for a long time. We rounded the top mark in 6th place and were close to the leaders. We were in a little pack of four boats around the entire course and lost two on the second upwind, when our speed was not great. We made some better decisions around the course this time and finished the race in 8th place. We are currently in 7th place overall and the 3rd US Women’s Team.
