The past two days have been action packed for Team Molly. Although not a lot has changed in the scores, we’ve had some really good moments on the racecourse.
Yesterday was pretty light winds. Our downwind boat speed has made some huge strides. We are finally passing boats on the downwind legs. We were also making some good tactical decisions downwind. Furthermore, we had two really good starts. Our upwind boat speed is good at times but not consistently enough to be with the top girls . With our boat speed a little bit off at times, we were left with very difficult tactical decisions. But our coach Elizabeth Kratzig offered great advice about how to deal with these tough situations. We ended the day with a 14th and 12th.
Today was a very strange day. A front passed through the racecourse about halfway through the first race. It caused a very large right shift and an increase in velocity. Unfortunately, we tacked before we really got into the shift and velocity and lost many boats on the second beat of the race. The rest of the race was very skewed and we passed a few boats. The second race today was very windy. This was Team Molly’s first heavy air race together. And for the most part it was successful. Our upwind boat speed was pretty good and we were able to pass two boats on the first downwind leg. However, we struggled a little bit on the next beat, missing a large shift. We finished the day with a 15th and a 14th.
