Team Molly just completed their May Training in Cascais, Portugal as
well as a six-week trip to Europe. We made a lot of progress over this
trip to Europe, especially over the past 10 days in Cascais.
In the past few days, we rigged a new mast. We had never put up this
mast and we wanted to see if it bent differently and made our sails
set up nicer. After one and half days of hard work we went made it on
the water with the new mast. It was unbelievable the difference the
new mast made. We were able to have better control of their shape with
this mast. We think this could significantly help our speed,
especially when we put up some new sails.
We also continued to work on our boat handling and boat speed. We did
a lot of races with 6-12 other boats. We did well in most of these
informal races. A lot of good situations came up that we were able to
talk about with Elizabeth. Our upwind technique and speed is
continuing to improve and we saw the benefits in these informal races.
We are still working on our communication so that we can make quick
decisions when necessary.
Over the past six weeks, Team Molly has made a huge jump. We feel
more confident in the boat, which is shown in our more aggressive boat
handling and racecourse placeent. Our speed is definitely better in a
lot of conditions; we are able to hang in much tighter lanes than we
used to. Furthermore, our communication and racecourse management has
become stronger; we are able to make better decisions quickly.
We will take a break for the next two and half weeks before we go to
Thessaloniki, Greece for the European Championships. This will be a
good time to let everything we have just learned sink in and come back
ready to compete at the end of the month.
