Thessaloniki, Greece. While there were many ups and downs to the regatta, we learned a lot from the high level of racing. On the final day there was only one race in a light sea breeze, about 4-6 knots. At the start the boat end of the line was significantly favored. The whole fleet was fighting for the boat end of the line, we decided to start to leeward of the crowd of boats. We were looking great off the line. We had excellent speed and pointing ability. Unfortunately, the wind continued to shift to the right an additional 45 degrees. Because we had started below the boats at the boat end of the line and continued on starboard, we were one of the left most boats. We got the windward mark in front of about 5 boats. The rest of the race was very skewed, but we were still able to pass some boats to finish the race in 14th place. We ended up finishing the regatta in 14th place in silver fleet or 38th place overall. For full results, please visit: http://www.ncth.gr/470/. This finish was below what we had hoped for going into the regatta. Nevertheless, the regatta was very productive. Our speed has definitely improved; we can now hold in tight lanes much longer than we used to. Still, we would like to be able to stay in these lanes a little bit longer. Our starts were all excellent minus the race that was cancelled; and our first beats improved over the course of the regatta. We still lose boats in really congested parts of the racecourse. We need to continue working on our boat speed and decision-making. We had trouble recognizing persistent shifts and choosing how we want to approach the windward mark.
