We recently purchased two new masts to be spare masts. But before we put up any of the new masts we did a bend test on all three of the masts we own. One of the new masts was very similar to the mast we had been using. So we decided that would be our spare mast for the Trials. However, we needed to sail with the mast for a few days so that we were used to it in case we have to use it. We also repacked our centerboard trunk and redid our gaskets. Our boat is feeling good and we have spares of almost everything. A few more small projects and it will be good to go. We also did a ton of sailing over the past few days. We are still working with our Canadian training partners and coach, Elizabeth Kratzig. We are focusing on technique, set up and boat handling. We are seeing improvements each day and feeling confident in the progress we are making. Two days ago we did a bunch of short course races with some of the other top men’s and women’s teams in the world that are all here training. We did pretty well in the short course races, but the following day we did really long races. We struggled a little bit in our upwind speed but excelled downwind. We have really improved our downwind and reaching speed. We are able to pass boats no matter where we are in the fleet. We have some new theories about our mainsail and mast in the light air and chop. We think with a couple small adjustments our speed will be equal with the top boats. We are taking today off from sailing and then we will have a practice regatta the following three days. The regatta will be very competitive with everyone’s training partners from around the world competing. It will be very useful for us to see if there is anything we need to work on in the last few days leading up to the trials.
