9/25/2007 - Mikey Murison 470 Regatta

Team Molly has just completed the Mikey Murison 470 Regatta in Long Beach, CA. This was considered a warm up event for the US Olympic Trials. There were 16 boats competing from all over the world. Many of the US teams had international training partners working with them prior and during the event. Racing was very competitive and a great opportunity to learn more about the race course as well as the race committee.

The conditions were a little odd for long beach. A cold front came through on Saturday afternoon and it rained for the first time in 5 months in Southern California. Although it brought a well-needed rain, it made the sailing a little challenging and abnormal. It also made the water very polluted and unpleasant to be on. We had wind anywhere between 2 knots and 15 knots, and up to 40-degree shifts. There were also overdeveloped waves all weekend. Our main goal for the event was to concrete our racing routine, which we accomplished. We also wanted to continue to work on our upwind speed in the lighter air. The conditions were constantly changing, making speed very difficult to keep consistent. The first two days we struggled with starting and were never able to really get a good race together. The last day we had better starts and had some better races. We were in 3rd place for most of one of the races, until we fouled the Argentinean team. We finished the event in 14th place. The US Olympic Trials will have no international teams and will be a very different event. There will be 16 races over nine days. In preparation for this long, intense event we are at home now taking a rest for five days. Registration and measurement begin on October 3rd and racing begins on October 6th. We would like to thank our training partners, Jen Provan and Carol Luttmer, for all of their help over the past three weeks. Their support and presence was very valuable for our campaign. We cannot thank them enough for their assistance. We had lots of fun hanging out as well as sailing with them. We would also like to thank again the Schmidt family for allowing us to use their motorboat. These two additions, along with our coach, Elizabeth Kratzig, made the past three weeks of training very productive.
