Team Molly has been down under training for the past week. Molly O’Bryan Vandemoer is on her honeymoon so Molly Carapiet is sailing with Dave Hughes, the crew of the men’s runner up team at the US Olympic Trials and also works for North Sails where we buy our sails. We have been sailing in Melbourne, Australia, the site of the 2008 470 World Championships, which occur at the end of January.
We are training with Amanda Clark and Sarah Mergenthaler, the US Olympic representatives, as well as the Czech Olympic hopefuls and their coach Ian Warren, a Melbourne native. We have a really good training group with a coach who has tons of local knowledge. Over the past week we have seen three different wind directions, including the sea breeze, which happens 60% of the days in January. All of the conditions are tricky and we are glad to get sailing time here. Everyday we have had beautiful sailing in sunny Australia. Our goals for the training camp are to learn about Melbourne as well as for Molly C. to learn as much as possible from Dave. We have been working hard to accomplish both of those goals. Dave has been a wonderful addition to Team Molly, not only helping with the stuff in the boat but also strategy for the Worlds and looking forward.
This weekend there is a regatta at a local yacht club called the Go For Gold Regatta. It is a small event for 470’s because the Australian nationals are happening in Sydney simultaneously. The first day we had some speed issues, but we made some adjustments to our set up and did much better the second day. We are currently in 4th place overall. We are taking Monday off from sailing and then we will continue training for another week.
