Team Molly has begun training in Melbourne, Australia. We are preparing for the 2008 470 World Championships, occurring January 21st through 30th out of the Mordialloc Sailing Club. We arrived in Melbourne on January 3rd and have been sailing for the past four days. We have already seen a variety of conditions.
The first two days of training we saw dying northerly breezes and very hot weather. We were training with two American men’s teams and the Canandian men’s and women’s teams. We did a lot of boat handling and some short races. The second day we had some real successes in the light air. The last two days, we saw bigger breeze, about 15-20 knots with large waves. The waves were quite difficult to sail in because they were very close together. They also made it very hard to get back onto the beach without wiping out. Yesterday we received some valuable coaching by Gold Medalist Kevin Burnham and sailed with the Danish Women’s Team.
We will be moving our boat to another yacht club on the same bay tomorrow in order to compete in Sail Melbourne, taking place January 14-19th. This will be a warm up event for the World Championships. Prior to Sail Melbourne we will resume our training with the US Women’s Olympic representatives and the Czech women’s team.
